Improving Erections

One of a man's worst fears is not being able to perform in the bedroom. The loss of the feeling of masculinity paired with the embarrassment of not being able to please your partner sexually should never be an issue. However, erectile dysfunction (ED) affects as many as 52 percent of men, 40 percent being 40 or older, and 70 percent in their seventies.

If you are having trouble achieving or maintaining an erection during sex, you may have erectile dysfunction. Less interest in sexual activity (low libido) is another symptom you may be experiencing. If this is a recurring problem, you are likely to become diagnosed by a doctor.

Though this may seem like a major issue, ED is easily treatable with a variety of treatment options available. Below are five treatments for improving erections ranging from oral medications to home remedies.

Treating Erectile Dysfunction

The first step in any treatment plan would be to make sure your blood sugar level and blood pressure are under control. Once these are in check, you can consider one of the many options used for improving erections. Your treatment choice will depend on what is causing your ED.

Oral medications

Easily one of the most popular treatments for improving erections, oral medications have proven success rates in 65% of men. The phosphodiesterase inhibitors that are most prescribed and used are Viagra, Cialis, Stendra, and Levitra.

The medication works by enhancing a natural chemical in your body - nitric oxide - which relaxes muscles in the penis and increases blood flow, allowing an erection in response to sexual arousal.

While some of these are required to be taken on an empty stomach and only last a certain amount of hours, Cialis is the preferred oral medication because it can be taken on a full stomach and lasts for up to 36 hours.

Although oral medications have worked for 65% of men, those who suffer from ED and diabetes are less likely to respond to them. Less than 35% of men who suffer from erectile dysfunction after prostate cancer surgery will have success with one of the above medications.

Implants and Pumps

If you want to avoid taking medication, another option for improving erections is an internal penile implant or penis pump.

The internal penile implant is done during a 45-minute outpatient procedure where the pump is placed through a small opening in the scrotum. All you have to do is squeeze the pump and fluid is pumped to the penis, resulting in a long-lasting erection. The implant lasts a lifetime and requires no maintenance.

Avoiding surgery is another option with a penis pump.

The pump, which can be battery operated or hand-powered, has a tube that's placed over your penis and acts as a vacuum to suck out the air inside the tube. This pulls blood into your penis, creating an erection, and is secured with a tension ring at the base.

You can remove the tube once the ring is in place. The erection typically lasts long enough for a couple to have sex. Ejaculation won't be possible with the band in place, and side effects could include bruising of the penis, as well as feeling cold to the touch. Make sure to remove the tension ring after intercourse.

Herbal Treatments

Herbal treatments work naturally to improve erections, and some men prefer them. One recommended herbal treatment is a dietary supplement made from soy and wild yam for Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which is a natural hormone produced by your adrenal glands. This is also a great option for men suffering from ED and concurrent diabetes.

There are a number of herbal treatments similar to DHEA such as acupuncture, Rhodiola Rosea, Panax ginseng, and Yohimbe. While some of these can be found in dietary supplement form, others are drunk in teas. Zinc supplements are also found to help those who are low in zinc.

L-arginine is another great herbal treatment option. Taking 5 grams of L-arginine - an amino acid found in your body - per day improves sexual function. When paired with pycnogenol, performances can be restored up to 80 percent after two months.

Before you plan to take any herbal treatments, talk with your doctor and discuss the treatments you are interested in to make sure they are safe to use.

Home Remedies

Home remedies only require simple changes in everyday activities and lifestyles.

Beginning an exercise routine with moderate to vigorous aerobic activity can improve ED. Regularly exercising, though less strenuous, can also still help erectile dysfunction symptoms. Not only will exercising help with your ED, but it will also reduce stress, increase blood flow, and help you lose weight which could all be underlying issues attributing to your ED.

Excessive alcohol drinking could also be affecting your ability to perform, as well as smoking cigarettes. Tobacco is known to narrow blood vessels, which in turn could affect the blood flow to your penis.

Everyday stress can also be an attributing factor; doctors recommend discussing with your partner what is going on and being open to counseling if problems continue to occur.

Improving Erections Is Possible

From oral medications to home remedies, erectile dysfunction is a treatable and manageable condition. Depending on your lifestyle and health condition, there are multiple treatments which can work and benefit you. Remember to consult your doctor before beginning any new treatment
