The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product. There is no generic available in Canada. We only dispense generic Rivaroxaban manufactured by Natco Pharma from India, it’s also known as Rpigat.

Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) is an Rx medication that is used to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT; a blood clot, usually in the leg) and pulmonary embolism (PE; a blood clot in the lung). Rivaroxaban may be continued to prevent DVT and/or PE from happening again after initial treatment is completed. It is also used to help prevent strokes or serious blood clots in people who have atrial fibrillation (a condition in which the heart beats irregularly, increasing the chance of clots forming in the body, and possibly causing strokes) without heart valve disease.

Rivaroxaban may reduce the risk of DVT, which can lead to PE in people who are having hip replacement or knee replacement surgery. It is in a class of medications called factor Xa inhibitors. Rivaroxaban works by decreasing the clotting ability of the blood.

Rivaroxaban comes as a tablet to take by mouth. For the treatment of a DVT and PE, rivaroxaban is usually taken with food twice daily for 21 days, then once daily. When rivaroxaban is taken to prevent DVT and PE, it is usually taken once daily with food. When rivaroxaban is used to prevent a stroke in those with an irregular heartbeat, it is usually taken once daily with the evening meal. When rivaroxaban is taken to prevent DVT and PE after hip or knee replacement surgery it is usually taken with or without food once daily. The first dose should be taken at least 6 to 10 hours after surgery. Rivaroxaban is usually taken for 35 days after a hip replacement surgery and for 12 days after knee replacement surgery.

Try to take rivaroxaban at around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take rivaroxaban exactly as directed and please, do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

If you are unable to swallow the tablets, you can crush them and mix with applesauce. Swallow the mixture right after you prepare it and do not mix and keep for future use.

Continue to take rivaroxaban even if you feel well. Do not stop taking rivaroxaban without talking to your doctor. If you stop taking rivaroxaban, your risk of a blood clot may increase.

PACKAGING

Brand Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) comes from Canada and is manufactured by Bayer. This medication is available in doses of 10mg in quantities of 50 and 100 tablets, 15mg in quantities of 90 tablets and 20mg also in quantities of 90 tablets. A generic form of Rivaroxaban is not yet available.

Store at room temperature, away from moisture, light, and heat (not in the bathroom) and out of the sight and reach of children and pets.

Please, do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired. These measures will help to protect the (our) environment.

SIDE-EFFECTS

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Easy bruising or minor bleeding (such as nosebleed, bleeding from cuts) may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

This medication can cause serious bleeding if it affects your blood clotting proteins too much. Tell your doctor right away if you have any signs of serious bleeding, including: unusual pain/swelling/discomfort, unusual bruising, prolonged bleeding from cuts or gums, persistent/frequent nosebleeds, unusually heavy/prolonged menstrual flow, pink/dark urine, coughing up blood, vomit that is bloody or looks like coffee grounds, severe headache, dizziness/fainting, unusual or persistent tiredness/weakness, bloody/black/tarry stools, difficulty swallowing.

Get medical help right away if you have any signs of very serious bleeding, including: vision changes, confusion, slurred speech, weakness on one side of the body.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist – especially if persistent.

SAFETY

Before taking rivaroxaban, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: liver disease, kidney disease, bleeding problems (such as bleeding of the stomach/intestines, bleeding in the brain), stroke, recent major injury/surgery, blood disorders (such as anemia, hemophilia, thrombocytopenia), frequent falls/injuries, certain eye problem (retinopathy), certain hereditary enzyme problems (such as galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, glucose-galactose malabsorption).

It is important that all your doctors and dentists know that you take rivaroxaban. Before having surgery or any medical/dental procedures, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using this medication.

This medication may cause stomach bleeding. Daily use of alcohol while using this medicine will increase your risk for stomach bleeding. Please limit alcoholic beverages - ask your doctor or pharmacist about how much alcohol you may safely drink.

This medication can cause bleeding. To lower the chance of getting cut, bruised, or injured, use great caution with sharp objects like safety razors and nail cutters. Use an electric razor when shaving and a soft toothbrush when brushing your teeth. Avoid activities such as contact sports. If you fall or injure yourself, especially if you hit your head, contact your doctor right away. Your doctor may need to check you for hidden bleeding that could be serious.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or if you plan to become pregnant. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor before using this medication.

It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Can Other Medicines Affect Xarelto (Rivaroxaban)?

Drug interactions may change how your medications work or increase your risk for serious side effects. This leaflet does not contain all possible drug interactions. Keep a list of all the products you use (including prescription/non-prescription drugs and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicines without your doctor's approval.

Some products that may interact with this drug include: mifepristone, certain antidepressants (including SSRIs such as fluoxetine, SNRIs such as venlafaxine).

Other medications can affect the removal of rivaroxaban from your body, which may affect how rivaroxaban works. Examples include cobicistat, conivaptan, certain azole antifungals (itraconazole, ketoconazole, posaconazole), rifamycins (such as rifampin), HIV protease inhibitors (such as lopinavir, ritonavir), St. John's wort, drugs used to treat seizures (such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital), among others.

Aspirin can increase the risk of bleeding when used with this medication. However, if your doctor has directed you to take low-dose aspirin for heart attack or stroke prevention (usually at dosages of 81-325 milligrams a day), you should continue taking it unless your doctor instructs you otherwise.
