What Is The Drug Maxalt Used For?

Maxalt belongs to a class of drugs known as triptans and is used for the treatment of migraine headaches. How is Maxalt Metabolized in Body?

Maxalt (rizatriptan) is metabolized in liver and has a half-life of approximately 2-3 hours.

What Are The Possible Side Effects of Maxalt?

Like all other medications, Maxalt can also cause side effects. Call your doctor right away or go to the nearest emergency room if you experience any of the following:
  • Heart attack with symptoms such as chest pain and discomfort, uncontrollable pressure, squeezing or fullness, pain or discomfort in your arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach,shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort, breaking out in a cold sweat,nausea or vomiting, lightheadedness.
  • Stroke with symptoms such as numbness or weakness in your face, arm or leg, especially on one side of your body, confusion, problems speaking or understanding, problems seeing in one or both of your eyes, problems walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, severe headache with no known cause.
  • Blood vessel problems with symptoms such as bloody diarrhea, stomach pain, vision problems, coldness and numbness of hands and feet.
  • Serotonin Syndrome when Maxalt is taken with certain medications. Symptoms include agitation, hallucinations, coma, fast heartbeat, fast changes in your blood pressure, increased body temperature, muscle spasm, loss of coordination, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
  • Increased blood pressure

When Should You Not Take Maxalt?

Do not take Maxalt if you:
  • Have heart problems

  • Have ischemic bowel disease
  • Have narrowing of blood vessels in your legs, arms, stomach or kidney

  • Have taken MAO inhibitors in the past 2 weeks
  • Are allergic to rizatriptan or any of the ingredients in Maxalt.

Before you take Maxalt, you should tell your doctor if you:
  • Have or had heart problems or family history of heart issues and stroke
  • Have shortness of breath or chest pain
  • Have high cholesterol or high and uncontrolled blood pressure
  • Have diabetes
  • Smoke
  • Are obese or overweight
  • Are a female who has gone through menopause
  • Are a male over the age of 40 years

  • Are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. The effect of Maxalt on the unborn baby is unknown.
  • Are breast-feeding or planning to breast-feed. It is not known whether Maxalt passes into breast milk. Discuss with your doctor about the best ways to feed your baby when taking Maxalt.
  • Have phenylketonuria (PKU) as Maxalt-MLT orally disintegrating tablets contain phenylalanine.

Especially tell your doctor if you take anti-depressant medicines called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). Taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine, or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) like venlafaxine. Taking these with Maxalt or other triptans can lead to a life threatening condition such called serotonin syndrome. Its symptoms include restlessness, diarrhea, loss of coordination, hallucinations, nausea, fast heartbeat, vomiting, increased temperature of body, changes in blood pressure and overactive reflexes.

It is important to tell your health care professional about all other medicines that you have taken recently including any kind of supplements and non-prescription drugs.

A number of medicines can affect the way Maxalt works. Especially tell your doctor if you take:
  • Propranolol containing medications such as Inderal, Inderal LA, or Innopran XL
  • Medicines used to treat mood disorders, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs).
